Freshman Year
As a first generation college student I began my college journey when I was accepted into Lamar University the fall of 2017. From this point on I set a goal to graduate in 3 years, and I have been progressively working to meet my goal ever since. I’ve always wanted to strive to improve myself even in the face of obstacles and adversity, this is why at the end of my first semester I decided to apply for the Reaud Honors College. The spring of 2018 I was accepted as a freshman and I began a new journey. As a first generation black student I was filled with immense joy and was extremely proud of myself to have been accepted into a honors college. I continue to work extra hard and underwent one of the the most valuable experiences that semester by participating in the fifth annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities EXPO. Out of the 112 presentations by 190 students working with 52 faculty mentors representing 25 academic departments, I presented and won an $100 award for the Sex and Gender Differences in the Medical Field. Through my extensive research and findings, I was able to develop my career.
The spring of 2018 I attended a softball game Lamar University vs University of Houston on Wednesday April 11th 4pm. Not only was I eager to attend and cheer on my school, but my best friend Caela from high school would be playing softball for UH. It was a surreal experience to be able to watch this game and see Caela play college ball. Despite the attention grabbing game, unfortunately Lamar did not win.
Cardinal Communities
Lamar offers many all inclusive opportunities for students to become involved in the environment around them, one of which is Cardinal Communities. I was an active member of the NSSLHA Cardinals Community. We met at 5pm once or twice a week throughout the spring 2018. We would attend Lamar sponsored events together. This provided me with a unique opportunity to meet people within in my field and network for the future.

Woman 2 Woman Organization
Woman2Woman is an organization which I volunteered in throughout my college career. At this particular event, I was most fond and expanded my horizons. We visited Girls Haven, a girls shelter, in the spring of 2018. We guided the girls in how to deal with bullying. We partook in several different activities that explained what bullying was and the many forms bullying comes in. We demonstrated different scenarios where the girls would decide whether or not the event taking place was bullying or not. Everything went very smoothly and we even had time to play games and had pizza. It was an incredible accomplishment to be able to be a role model to those girls.
