Sophomore Year
FALL 2018
Continuing my involvement in the Woman2Woman organization, I dominated in the Week of Welcoming Dodge Ball Competition at the start of fall 2018.
On October 6, 2018 I volunteered along with Woman2Woman to congratulate the runners with splashes of paint as they ran their way to the finish line in the 5k Color Run that would raise awareness for breast cancer.
I participated in the Student Leadership Conference on October 6, 2018. In this conference, I enhanced my learning skills, developed my character, and increased my ability to demonstrate selfless service to my community including those who need me. I was particularly touched by the speaking who I found extremely relatable and encouraging. All this combined boosted my leadership skills.
Lamar's Department of Theatre & Dance presented a showing of the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime on October 6, 2018. This particular show demonstrated how courageous even everyday things are to different people. This allowed me to be empathetic and realize everyone in the world goes through their own unique struggles.
Cardinal Conversations are unique in the fact that they are strictly by invite. The events are held at the President Evans' home where two guest faculty speakers present a topic to spread awareness pertaining to their field as well as the students in attendance. I attended a Cardinal Conversations on Disabilities, Stigma, & Society on October 10th. One speaker was the head of the Disability Resource Center on Lamar University's campus, who helped me learn of the many different amenities offered on campus and how to help those who need these services. This talk exposed me to realizing how close disabilities really are and what I can be doing to play my part in aiding those in my community.
I attended Stephen F Austin's Big Event Conference the fall of 2018 from October 19 to Oct 21st. At this conference, I learned about the position I now held as the Director of Outreach for Lamar's version of the Big Event.
Work hard, play harder. After studying intensely I decided to treat myself by attending a Lamar volleyball game on November 8, 2018.
Volunteering alongside NSSHLA at the Special Angels Rodeo where we served cotton candy to all the visitor and participants on November 10, 2018. I helped and spent time with many different diverse people and made many new friends. It was a heartfelt experience to be able to serve others selflessly.
In order to expand my circle and become more involved with a diverse group of people, I attended one of Lamar's famous tailgates on November 10, 2018! I must admit the football game was not as nearly as fun as the tailgating.
Once I got a taste of how riled up Lamar University fans got for the football, softball, and volleyball games I was curious to find out how crazy the basketball game games got. Finally on November 19, 2018 I ventured out to my first basketball game, I must say I was not disappointed.
After being a member of a summer reading club over the book Refugee by Alan Grantz with Andrea Karlin as mentor, I was attracted to attending a distinguished faculty lecture given Dr. M.K. Hamza on November 27, 2018. In his lecture, Dr. Hamza discussed the Human Devastation Syndrome. Dr. Hamza FaceTimed with other doctors who were migrants from war torn countries. He discusses the turmoil these doctors are put in as having a desire to serve their people, but having to escape in order to stay alive.
During Christmas, I decided to spread some joy by volunteering at the Salvation Army to wrap Christmas gifts for the less fortunate. On December 13, 2018 I met along with fellow Lamar students and had a gift wrapping competition against TSU students who also attended. Lamar's team did not disappoint.
Spring 2019
I was invited on February 22, 2019 to the Black Academic Excellence Awards Ceremony. To my surprise I received an award to commemorate my accomplishments and dedication on campus as a black student.
After attending all of Lamar's other sport events, I was finally ready to experience one of Lamar's baseball games. On April 3, 2019 I attended a game and found out why Lamar's baseball team received all the hype.
The Big Event was held on April 13, 2019. From my very first year as Director of Outreach, I was able to implement 14 service projects for students to participate in. The culmination of all my efforts and dreams as Director of Outreach were finally coming to fruition.
On April 17, 2019, I received a leadership certificate from the New Student Leadership Program on Lamar's campus. This certificate was a product of my increased efforts throughout my entire college career. I attended 20 classes on numerous topics that increased my ability to delegate my life and the tasks I had to complete. I can faithfully say that without my experiences, I would not be able to demonstrate the success which I constantly attain.
After intense dedication and effort I was finally able to attend Lamar's Ambassadors Welcome Party on April 29, 2019.
